ABSTRACT

Medical education research (MER) aims to improve the practice of medical education by applying the theory of educational research. Internationally, medical education research has grown exponentially and has established itself as a distinct field. In contrast, in India, the medical faculty is either bogged down by clinical responsibilities, or is busy with biomedical research. The recent initiatives such as implementation of competency-based medical education (CBME) for medical undergraduates, and push coming from regulatory agencies besides National Education Policy have become game changers. The emerging concept of scholarship, takes in to account all scholarly activities in a fair manner. The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) is helpful in connecting teaching with better patient care outcomes through evidence based approach. It also promotes a community of practice to boost research and publication activities. Finally, there is a need to enlarge the scope of research from treating sick children to promoting total wellbeing, which requires interdisciplinary and interprofessional approach to research.

ABSTRACT

Evidence based medical education has provided the standards to inform teaching practice. To the extent that teachers make educational decisions based on evidence, better learning results will be achieved in students and this will translate into new professionals providing quality health care to people. It is also important to incorporate health sciences into this evidence-based decision-making process, since this fact will favor collaborative and interdisciplinary work, therefore, the health of the community will be favored. The purpose of this article is to analyze the perspectives of medical education and the health sciences and to present the current and future challenges of this.

ABSTRACT

Education is socially constructed. How health care is provided also affected by many factors including culture, history, and economy as well as insurance system in a country. Medical school is responsible for fostering physicians who can respond to societal needs in the era of health inequality. Based on the experts' opinions and changes in the description of chapters in medical education textbooks, we will review the global trend of medical education and discuss the challenges

ABSTRACT

An overview is given of the process of developing a research question in medical education. Developing a question is the fundamental first step in research, regardless of whether the research is medical or educational. The medical researchers’ beliefs, emotions, and the changing trends in educational theory cannot be ignored when developing the educational research question. Therefore, educational researchers should reflect on their teaching and emotions to determine the subject of research. They must also consider whether the research question is appropriate through constructive brainstorming with peers, discussions with experts, and a broad literature review to acquire theoretical background information.

ABSTRACT

I assume that it is difficult for many people who are involved in medical education to maintain motivation to conduct medical education research and publish their studies because of many difficulties in Japan. However I experienced a sense of fulfilment after overcoming them and publishing my research articles. I expect that this description of my experience of publishing my studies in medical education with three TIPs to overcome several difficulties helps those who want to start medical education research and publish their studies.

ABSTRACT

Research on medical education has expanded in recent years. Students' participation in curriculum change has also increased, with major contributions. Initiation in scientific research has also been widely defended due to its positive impact on professional training. We report on the one-year experience at the Academic Center for Research in Medical Education (NAPEM), which incorporates proposals for student participation in discussions on medical teaching through scientific initiation projects in medical education. Founded in 2008, NAPEM was well-received by the academic community at the Botucatu School of Medicine/São Paulo State University (FMB/UNESP). Its current research projects focus on the evaluation of the course in medicine, student evaluation, factors influencing the search for scientific initiation, Student Leagues, and interdisciplinary approaches. A total of 17 students and ten faculty members are involved. In one year, NAPEM has presented papers at congresses, published an article in an indexed journal, and is certified by the Brazilian National Research Council (CNPq). Its challenges include the need for constant renewal of students and progress in research projects, to keep the latter from becoming self-contained, but rather to serve as a continuum in research, to the extent that new findings are added to the body of knowledge on medical education.
